Legion of Mary
History of the Legion of Mary
The Legion was founded in 1921 by Frank Duff who, inspired by the Holy
Spirit, took courageous steps to respond to the needs of street people
in Dublin, Ireland. From those beginnings more than 80 years ago, the
Legion of Mary now operates around the world with over one million
legionaries engaged in a wide variety of apostolic works. The Legion has
been approved by the last six Popes and was endorsed by the Second
Vatican Council.
Two Types of Membership:
- Active members attend prayer meetings and in pair, perform two hours
of apostolic work every week. Junior members, ages 8-17, are
accompanied by senior active members on visitations.
- Auxiliary members pray the rosary daily and recite the Legion
prayers. They do not attend the weekly meetings.
What are the Legion's Apostolic Works?
- Visiting the sick, the lonely, the elderly and shut-ins
- Praying the rosary with families and schoolchildren
- Instructing adults in the faith
- Giving support to stroke survivors
- Assisting long term care facility residents in attending Mass
